What does made to order mean, and why 8–14 weeks?
Nothing in our collection exists until someone orders it. What that means for you, and how to plan around the lead time.
Nothing in our collection exists until someone orders it. There's no warehouse of beds waiting in boxes, no stock of crosses in a standard colour. When you order a piece, it's made for you, in the finish you chose, and then sent. Every piece has a lead time for that reason.
Our current lead time is 8–14 weeks, and it's easier to plan around once you know what it covers.
What made to order means
A made-to-order piece is made after you order it, to the options you've chosen. For our furniture, the options are the piece itself and its finish: Obsidian, Oxblood, Gilt, Chalk, Forge Clear or any RAL colour. Every piece is S235 steel, coated in the finish you've chosen, and it's packed flat with printed assembly instructions once it's ready.
Made to order is different from bespoke. A made-to-order piece is a collection design made in the finish you choose. A bespoke piece is designed for you from a brief, with scaled drawings you approve before anything is made. Our guide to how a bespoke commission works covers that process.
Why it takes 8–14 weeks
A lead time covers everything between your order and dispatch. For a made-to-order piece, that means the piece is made, finished in your colour and packed, in turn.
The finish is a good example. Each finish is applied to your piece, in your colour, which means it can't be done in advance. For a RAL colour, send us the reference and we'll confirm it before you order.
Your lead time depends on the piece and the finish, and it's confirmed with your order; our lead times page has the latest picture.
Why we don't hold stock
Holding finished pieces in stock would mean choosing colours on your behalf and storing large steel frames until someone wanted one in that finish. Making to order lets every piece be finished in the colour its owner chose, including any RAL colour, and means each piece is made for a particular home. It also means the questions you ask before ordering, about the room, the route in or the finish, can shape what you order.
What you gain
Made to order gives you four things.
- A choice of finish: any of the five colours in our library, or any RAL colour.
- A piece that's new when it reaches you, made for your order.
- Time to ask questions. We answer questions throughout production, so you can ask about assembly, placement or care while your piece is being made.
- Time to prepare the room: measuring, clearing space, choosing bedding or a rug.
Planning around the lead time
A lead time is easiest to live with when you plan for it from the start.
Moving house or redecorating
If you're moving or redecorating, order with the lead time in mind, so the piece arrives once the room is ready. Delivering into a finished room is easier than working around decorators.
Replacing a bed
If a restraint bed is replacing the bed you sleep in now, plan where you'll sleep on the day of delivery and assembly, and how the old bed will leave the room. Our guide to assembling a flat-pack steel bed frame covers the day itself.
Checking the route in
Use the waiting time to check the route. Measure the narrowest door, stair and turn between the front door and the room, and send them to us. We'll check them against your piece. Our guide to measuring a room for restraint furniture explains what to measure.
If you need it by a particular date
If there's a date that matters, tell us before you order. We'll tell you plainly whether the current lead time is likely to meet it. Ask us about timing for any piece; we'd rather you knew before you ordered than after.
Bespoke timing
Bespoke work follows its own timeline, because the design stage comes first: your brief, measurements, scaled drawings and your written approval. We confirm the timing for a commission in your written quote. Our guide to how a bespoke commission works sets out each stage.
After your piece is ready
Our guide to what happens after you place an order walks through each step from order to assembly.

If your plans change
Plans change: a move falls through, a room is repurposed, a colour no longer suits. If anything changes at your end, contact us as early as you can. Every piece is made to order, so the sooner you tell us, the more we can do, and we'll act on your request urgently.
Questions about made to order
Can I change the colour after I order?
Contact us as early as you can. Because the finish is applied to your piece, the sooner you ask, the more we can do.

Our returns and cancellation page sets out your options. If you've changed your mind, contact us as early as you can.
Is the lead time the same for every piece?
