Bleach is the reflex reach for anyone used to disinfecting bathroom fixtures, and it's also the fastest way to dull a powder-coated finish that's meant to last decades. The two habits don't belong together, even though it looks like they should.
Powder coat is a cured polymer shell bonded to the steel underneath, not paint sitting on top of it. Bleach is a strong oxidiser, and repeated contact breaks down that polymer surface over time: the finish goes from even and glossy to chalky, then eventually starts to pit and let moisture reach the metal beneath it. One wipe-down won't ruin a frame. A cleaning routine built around bleach, over months and years, will.
Warm water and a mild, pH-neutral soap handles the vast majority of what a bed frame picks up day to day. For genuine disinfection rather than just cleaning, an isopropyl alcohol solution or a disinfectant specifically labelled safe for painted or coated metal surfaces is the better choice, applied with a soft cloth rather than sprayed directly and left to pool. Anything abrasive, steel wool, scouring pads, gritty cleaning powders, causes the same kind of damage as bleach through friction instead of chemistry.
Not every disinfectant labelled "multi-surface" is actually formulated with painted or powder-coated metal in mind, several are built for tile, laminate, or bare stainless steel instead. The label's stated compatible surfaces are worth checking before a new product gets used on the frame, rather than assuming multi-surface means every surface. Where the intended use is genuine disinfection between uses by different people, rather than routine cleaning, that's worth confirming against the product's own guidance or a reputable source on hygiene practice, since the right approach depends on what's actually being disinfected against and how thoroughly.
The frame's flat surfaces are the most forgiving part of this. Anchor points and any welded joints are where residue and moisture actually linger, since they're harder to wipe fully dry, and that's where corrosion starts first if a harsher chemical is used repeatedly. Drying those points properly after cleaning matters more than which mild cleaner was used to begin with.
Skip the bleach, keep it to mild soap for routine cleaning and an alcohol-based or coating-safe disinfectant when actual disinfection is needed, and dry the joints and anchor points properly every time. A finish built to last a lifetime only does that if what's cleaning it isn't slowly working against it.
